Maintaining Academic Integrity in this Digital Age: Teaching and Assessing English Writing in a Foundation Program in Kazakhstan

Abstract

This paper presents a case study of how one foundation program in Kazakhstan has modified teaching academic writing and assessing students in this age of increasing AI use to ensure students maintain academic integrity, practice critical and creative thinking, and improve writing skills. The program emphasizes authentic writing through continuous assessment methods, such as in-class portfolio writing and integrated skills exams, supported by digital tools to detect plagiarism and AI misuse. By prioritizing independent thought before technology reliance, the program helps students develop essential academic skills, fostering deeper understanding and reducing dependence on AI-generated content.
